Leaders in the Making

Key club is an international student-led organization that provides its members with opportunities to build character, serve the people of the community, and most importantly, develop leadership to make future leaders.

The advisor of the Key club at North Port Highschool is Mrs. Pomerleau. She, alongside the officers, supports this club. Key club at NPHS is to help students be better for themselves and their community. In these meetings, we get to learn more about citizenship, and how we all can work together to make Earth a better place. Many volunteer opportunities are brought up in every meeting. With each opportunity, members can both do good and get community service hours. The meeting is to be held in Room 5-105 at NPHS. These meetings occur every Tuesday. The purpose that the advisors and officers of Key club pursue is to simply help people.

The first Key club began in 1925 in Sacramento, California with 11 charter members. Key club was founded by Albert C. Olney and Frank C. Vincent, formerly Kiwanis International Club members and high school administrators. The headquarters of such a club is in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. There are now approximately 250,000 members in 5,000 clubs in the Florida District Area. In addition, Key club is represented in around 38 countries, and more than 276,000 make up Key club international. Key Club is a self-governing organization, meaning that each year, in each club all around the world, members elect their own student officers for club, district, and international boards. These officers have many responsibilities when it comes to the planning and organizing of key clubs. On the other hand, there is some controversy when it comes to whether Key club is a good organization to provide to students as there is toxicity within the club. Karen Vo of dailycal.org explains her experience with the club as pressuring and unhealthy. She goes on about how she felt as though a lot of responsibility was put on her as a high school student. “I was expected to be a cog in the machine and give my all to the organization” (Vo 1).

My assessment of Key club would be that it offers amazing and not to mention important opportunities to students all around the globe. Students can cooperate with their school and their teachers and principals and get to experience something invaluable. This prepares them for the real world and especially helps them with college admission. Key club is a well-recognized organization with an exceptional reputation, attracting colleges and universities that want students that are determined and aspire to make the world a better place. Finally, Key club will continue to benefit the students It obtains and makes better people in the end.
